TECHNOLOGY
These molecules, present in any living creature, contain the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce. This information is recorded as a sequence of four chemicals called bases. By “reading” these sequences we can tell, for example, what those organisms are, whether they are biologically active and what their role might be in the ecosystem. Moreover, all species (from bacteria to whales) constantly leave their genetic fingerprints in the environment and our modern molecular technologies allow deciphering this information from water, soil or even air samples.
