Patented computer-driven pump with sensor data features a compact design for enhanced replicability in eDNA sampling. Designed for use with Smith-Root eDNA filter packs, this water pump gives you the ability to program the sample volume, regulate filtration pressure, set specific flow rates and standardize your sampling process. With built-in USB metadata archiving (GPS, flow rate and pressure control), it provides a seamless solution for data tracking and is ideal for field transport.

The innovative self-preserving filters are designed to maximize DNA yield per liter of water while enabling automatic preservation through desiccation. Simply return the filter to its original packaging—no additional reagents required.

Available in multiple pore sizes and materials, these filters allow you to customize your setup to fit your project needs. Each pack includes a preloaded inline filter, forceps, and a tubing extension, ensuring seamless integration with Smith-Root samplers or your own sampling system.

For deeper water sampling, a specialized adapter connects the filter housing directly to a Niskin bottle, enabling immediate filtration of collected samples for eDNA analysis. To equip citizen scientists and commercial vessel operators with an easy-to-use eDNA sampling solution, we developed the semi-automated DNAutic device. Designed for seamless operation in freshwater and marine environments, it is fully compatible with Smith-Root self-preserving eDNA filter packs.

eQuip sampling system & filter kits

This original underwater sampling system was developed by Sequench with support from the Callaghan Innovation R&D fund. It allows concentrating waterborne eDNA without onboard pumps. Our patent-pending design uses a Venturi-based suction system: a narrow throat followed by up to three perimeter sampling openings. The pressure differential created by the Venturi effect enhances water intake and ensures consistent flow through the filter units mounted on each intake.

eQuip underwater sampler operates at cruising speeds up to 12 knots, delivering ~5–12 L/min per intake (speed-dependent) for high-volume eDNA capture and clean field workflows. Its teardrop hydrodynamic body minimises drag, while inverted planform lateral wings and directional fins keep the unit stable and on course during tow. The filter units are mounted onto outer parts of different sample collection systems with minimal handling interference, thus minimizing risk of contamination.

Proven on small motorboats, sailing yachts, and oceanographic vessels across lakes, coastal waters, and open ocean. With a weight depressor, the system can be submerged and towed to ~30 m depth.

The filter kit consists of the individually packed universal filter membrane holder made of recycled biomass-based plastic (PLA) and designed to hold off-the-shelf 47mm diameter filter membrane. The inner ring is designed to hold the membrane in place while sampling, but is easily detached from the base by flipping the lip, so the membrane can be isolated for downstream analysis in the lab without excessive manipulation. The lip on the base also acts as a handle and allows easy insertion/retrieval of the filter from the packaging and sampling devices.

For sampling, you simply take the filer units from the pouch, insert them into the sample mounts and deploy the device at 6-12 knots for 5-10 minutes (depending on your sample requirements). After the retrieval, remove the filter unit by the holding leap, shake off  excess of water, place it back into the desiccating pouch and store until further processing, or isolate the filter membrane into a tube filled with the buffer.
